What Can I Expect On My First Visit?
We are a 21st century doctor's office which means you will not be greeted with a stack of forms to complete before seeing the doctor. Our friendly staff will greet you with a smile and a ready desire to get you checked in using one of our user friendly iPads. Since most new patients choose to complete their health forms online at their convenience, we will have all of your initial information ready for the doctor to review ahead of your first visit, including your insurance benefits.
What Is A Chiropractic Adjustment?
An adjustment is how the chiropractor accesses your body's nervous system. The doctor will gently scan your spine for any signs of neurological dysfunction using her/his hands. Once the area(s) in need of a adjustment are determined, your doctor will use a variety of chiropractic care to begin making changes within the spinal joint(s). Sometimes you may hear an audible "crackle" or "pop" which simply indicates that joint had a pressure release, similar to opening up a can of soda. This release of pressure doesn't hurt...most patients actually find the release to be surprising soothing. The goal of the adjustment is to restore normal function within the joint and the nerve system so your body can function at it's best.
Are there any risks with chiropractic care?
This is one of our favorite questions since the proof is in the research. Chiropractic care, for more than a century, has proven itself to be so safe and effective via the statistical research on risk factors from insurance companies that it is now considered to be the largest complimentary health care throughout the world.
Is it bad to pop my own back or neck?
People often associate the popping sound of one's back or neck with a chiropractic adjustment yet the two are not the same. If a person has a repeated desire to do this, it is indicative of a quick fix to release pressure in an already injured joint. Over time, this repetitive release actually causes bigger problems of joint instability, inflammation and arthritis since the core problem is not being corrected. Any person who makes a habit out of purposely attempting to "pop" their spine needs to see a Chiropractor for an examination and proper correction of their spine.
Should I use ice or heat when I am in pain?
Every situation is unique but generally speaking ice should be applied with an acute injury. The body's natural response to an injury is muscle spasm and inflammation which both produce internal heat as a by-product. Therefore it is useful to calm down the inflammatory response with ice. Heat is best used for chronic situations such as achy joints from arthritis.
Once I begin chiropractic care, will I have to keep coming forever?
The extent of your health care is always up to you. Our goal is to restore your body back to optimal health as quickly as possible. We evaluate your progress each visit and once your initial problems are resolved, we begin your next phase of care to optimize long term results. This second phase will assist in you learning how to strengthen your muscles, identify habits that hinder your health, improve your posture and teach you how to make great nutritional choices. Our goal is to fully resolve your spinal problems so we don't have to keep treating you for a similar episode later.
